KEWL: Mt. Eden

Crater in Mt. Eden

The highest point in all of Auckland (naturally, that is), Mt. Eden is a volcano that looms at 196 metres above sea level (that’s 643 feet for you non-metric peeps) and is surrounded by a crater 50 metres (164 feet) deep, caused by an eruption 15,000 years ago from the volcano.

The volcano is situated in a suburb by the same name, located south of the city centre. The climb isn’t overly strenuous, but we did get lost as we ventured over to the suburb, having to stop a few times to review the map. At the top of the volcano, the views are incredible. You can see all the way around, including the equally infamous One Tree Hill, a volcanic peak we unfortunately did not have the time to check out.

View from Mt. Eden

Mt. Eden is definitely one of the most interesting places we visited. It’s not every day you can literally walk around a crater caused by a volcano (unfortunately, they discourage you to actually walk in the crater). However, as a warning, the volcano is swimming with tourists, so avoid peak times and try to visit the volcano in the morning, unless you don’t mind tourists popping up in your pictures occasionally. – Jennifer
